Bob Thornton Named 18U Head Coach, New Tryout Dates

The PAL Junior Islanders are pleased to announce the hiring of Bob Thornton as Head Coach of the U18 team!

Bob Thornton begins his first season with the PAL Junior Islanders organization out of Islanders Iceworks after completing a stint with the New Jersey Rockets that lasted nearly ten seasons. Prioritizing player development and promotion, over the years, Thornton has moved players to the NCAA, NTDP, USHL, and OHL. Between 2011-2014, Thornton saw five of his players advance to the United States National Team Development Program with two of his former players attending the 2015 Evaluation Camp. Thornton also saw several of his players sign professional contacts to the NHL, AHL and ECHL. He has had players selected in the 2013 and 2014 NHL drafts and has players projected for the upcoming 2015 draft.

A graduate of nearby SUNY-Old Westbury with a degree in communications, after finishing his junior career in the USHL and OHL, Thornton was a longtime pro player in the ECHL.  Prior to joining the Rockets, Thornton served as a coach for the Roanoke Express (ECHL).

Thornton was also the founder of the USHL combine program to the and also owns and operates the Elite Hockey Group.

A born and raised Long Islander, Thornton resides in Port Washington, New York with his wife Annie and their two sons, Robert and Matthew.



At the 18U level, new tryout dates are as follows:

March 31 - 7:30 PM

April 1 - 6:45 PM

Both dates will be held at Islanders Iceworks (Syosset) and all costs are the same.
